On all three TYT 9800 radios that I have had, the radio will eventually lock up while transmitting in cross band repeater mode. The first time this happened, I was using the 9800 between my HT and a friend''s repeater. This radio stuck in transmit mode effectively jamming his repeater until I could power it off. When this happens, the radio is unresponsive. It may take 5 minutes or 4 hours but it will eventually lock up while transmitting. The only solution is to power it off and back on. One ultimately died on me after the Amazon return period. TYT boasts a 2 year manufacturer warranty but I contacted them several times over a month and received no response. I thought it was nice, but certainly priced too high to be worth the investment for me. Up until recently I had only ever used and needed a single band 2 meter or dual band VHF/UHF rig in the vehicle and that met my needs. 4 bands? Who really uses or needs 4 bands? I Thought to myself.

In recent years I''ve been both more active on the ham radio and doing more on the road. Often times there were UHF repeaters that would lend themselves better to a particular situation but I only had 2 meters available. Or sometimes If I had dual band it was just a 5 watt HT hooked to a mobile antenna. It performed well but I needed more power and less clutter than having speakers, microphones, power cables and coax strung all over the car.

It had been since I got my ticket in 2001 I last purchased a brand new mobile radio. Yes, I was definitely due for new mobile rig. I figured it may as well be the best mobile I can afford. But $400+ for a Yaesu quad bander? Still no way I could justify it. With lots of chatter amongst the locals about the new budget priced Chinese rigs I began to pay attention. A year before the TYT-TH9800 was even produced I found out it was in the design stages. I made a point to follow the progress and buy one if it turned out to be worthwhile.

So was it worthwhile? Well, turns out my job is now sending me on road trips as much as 300 miles or more a day. Remote wilderness areas of upstate PA. No cell service dead zones. The HT had to go and I replaced it with the TH9800. Now I wonder how I ever got by on anything less. Paired with a tri-band Radio Shack "scanner" antenna this rig has been pure mobile operating bliss. Its powerful, reliable, and easy to operate.The hyper memories (A-F keys) are especially useful. As I travel to different regions of the state I can set and later recall a preset configuration for the radio to match the repeaters I use in that region. No need to scroll through hundreds of memories.

I find myself using the dual receive all the time. As I''m beginning to fade on one repeater I can scan or look for another on the other side of the rig with a smooth as silk transition. I especially like that this radio, unlike the Yaesu version allows reception of CB. So I can have CB channel 19 on the left and 2 meters on the right. I squelch ch19 for only the important stuff and carry on my repeater rag chew as I put the interstate miles behind me.

Audio reports have been fabulous, with quite a few saying "Where can I get one" in response to hearing the offerings of this radio. All 800 memories of this radio are full, thanks to ordering the USB Programming cable. Yes, it CAN be done in CHIRP, contrary to most of what you read on the web. CHIRP cannot upload and download to the radio yet but that''s no big deal. You simply use the TYT software to capture a .dat file and open that in CHIRP. Then you can use all the neat options in CHIRP to download your frequencies and import them into the .dat file. Use the TYT to upload the .dat. Done! I have every 10/6/2/70 repeater in the state loaded into the radio with plenty of extra room. Outside of having a mobile all band/all mode I dont think it gets any better than this radio. Especially for this price!!

*My version is the "Plus Upgraded" version. This version, according to the TYT representative that wrote me back,(great customer service) fixes several bugs in the firmware and makes the crossband repeat feature work better. 272 people found this helpful Helpful

I hook the radio up to a watt meter and it holds pretty true to the power settings. With low power right around 5 Watts and higher power 65 Watts on VHF and 45 Watts on UHF. ... I will recommend if anyone was to purchase this radio they should buy a power supply with a minimal of 20 amps. The radio on high power will use approximately 12 to 15 amps.

Update I have had the radio now for approximately 6 months and no issues whatsoever. Radio is still holding true to power output audio reports come back just fine. If I ever need another Mobile Radio I would not hesitate to purchase another one
Update 01/10/2018 I''ve had the radio for more than a year now and no issues at all radio still works great. Power level is still as it was when radio was brand new. The receive and transmit side of the radio working flawlessly. This is an exact clone of the FT-8900, which is about $180 more more expensive AND less capabilities. To my surprise, I am very happy with this purchase. Chinese radios has been criticized by many ham operators but little do they know that all "Japanese made" radios are actually made also in China, or parts of it at least. This is no exception. I see a well built and very good quality ham radio. It does exactly what the FT-8900 but with unlocked transmit in all bands! It can also transmit in AM in 10 and CB bands. All this the FT-8900 can not do. This is a good addition to your shack if you are really objective in evaluating quality, performance, and capabilities. I own a Yaesu FT-8800 and other Yaesus but I have to admit that this is better that the FT-8900 in so many aspects.

The only thing I did not like about it out of the box is it is set not to transmit if the frequency is busy or has a carrier (Busy Lock). This will be frustrating and can turn off any ham operator. To add to that frustration, there is no option in the radio''s menu that can turn that off. Imagine checking into a net but you cant because you''re waiting for the repeater to drop, which rarely happens.Bottom line, you won''t be able to use it out of the box if you are going to work repeaters. This is the only thing that kills this radio and why TYT designed it as a default is beyond me. Make sure you purchase the programming cable and have the TYT program ready to disable that function.

Ps. Your antivirus might prompt you a warning because the program was developed by "unknown" publisher. Its fine and I have verified it with my Norton 360.

Bottom line: You are saving aprox. $180 (even with Yaesu''s $50 rebate) with same FT-8900 capabilities + a lot more BUT you have to flash/update or use your computer to fix the "Busy Lock" bug. 195 people found this helpful Helpful

This radio is very intuitive and is really fun to operate and have access to four great ham bands, aircraft and 800Mhz scanning functions!
Too bad there is no AM transmit on the 29Mhz band!
The Quad band antenna that came with the radio works like a dream!
It is so nice to be able to go to any of the four bands with no hassles!
I programmed FRS, MURS and many of the FM ham bands I love working on the way to work.
It''s fun to listen in on the chatter on Wallmarts frequency (154.570) while sitting in their parking lot.
It''s everything a scanner is and ham radio too!

See more This is the TYT TY9800+ model (the newest version 1508A), purchased from TPK Radios, another seller elsewhere. The seller, reportedly, tests the radios before shipping. I believe they did so, but they probably couldn''t have found the problem I have, just powering it on and doing a quick check.

I struggled to give this a 3, because I would like to give it a 3.5. This radio works in all respects, but I want to focus on the faults.

Fault 1: The radio has a slight high-pitched whine in receive on the right-side. The left-side receive is OK. This isn''t a dealbreaker for me, because I just listen to the left side, unless a signal comes in on both. I usually leave the right side on a simplex channel that goes unused, unless a friend comes on, anyway.

Fault 2: The mic doesn''t sound particularly great. A friend says I sound best with I hold it about 10 inches from my face. The three tiny holes for the mic, upper-right of keypad, are easy to cover with your thumb, too. Otherwise, the keyboard function on the mic is nice to have.

Fault 3: The radio has a "compander" feature, which is somewhat like a compressor. The effect is kind of useless, however, because it ruins the audio just enough to be annoying. The best way to describe it is it makes the audio sound a lot like overly-aggressive Dolby C did on my cassette tapes back in the 1980''s. The last several milliseconds of each word gets clipped off. You can understand it, but is uncomfortable.

The other general features of the radio work fine. I have used Crossband repeat, and it has been unexpectedly useful, but it makes the radio hot, so, as suggested in the manual, I run it only with low power. It is nice to walk around the house (or neighborhood) with my Baofeng HT, and access this repeater for better transmit.

I purchased this radio, instead of a Yaesu, because getting a Yaesu to Korea involves far higher costs and fees on import. Local sellers gouge us on Yaesu in Korea -- costs for name-brand radios are double US prices. I tried this, because I could ship this radio for what you''d pay on E-bay for it (about $235). If I had been in the USA, I would have gone with a Yaesu -- no doubt. Even a less-featured Yaesu, for the money. But, as I am in Korea, I went with this. It is serving its purpose just fine, so I am not upset with the purchase. I just want to be honest about its shortcomings. I''m hoping it holds together fine. 29 people found this helpful Helpful

I understand why this its happening (FCC) but they need to inform us when.

I programmed both radios with VHF and UHF Repeaters and GMRS, MURS and FRS frequencies. I can listen to all channels/frequencies. However, when I transmit, I get a loud beep and the display says "ERROR" while pressing the PTT on any frequency that are MURS, FRS or GMRS. This is for GMRS repeaters as well. Same frequencies transmit fine on the older TYT-9800.

So in summary, this radio will not allow transmissions on GMRS, MURS or FRS. You therefore MUST have a Technicians HAM Radio Licenses to communicate to others. Also, others will need to also have to have a license to have a conversation with you since your only going to be doing that on amateur HAM radio frequencies.

Edit: There are methods to address this. DO install the vendor software and read all instructions. You can use Chirp after this but you will need to properly config this radio initially. Updated rating. 5 people found this helpful Helpful
