Overlin 5.0 out of 5 starsVerified Purchase A very good radio if you’re looking for a 10-12 meter mobile Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2019

See more I have to say that I didn’t like this radio while running tests as a base station. I think my Antron 99 was introducing too much noise. My change of mind happened once I installed this radio in my car. So, here are the things I like and dislike:
I like:
1. Very quiet receiver when used in my car. Low noise floor. I have to keep checking if the radio is on.
2. Good transmit audio. I left mine stock. No adjustments.
3. Sensitivity is great. I’m able to detect a tone at -127dbm.
3. RIT and XIT is included in V3. The non V3 didn’t have XIT feature in the menu. In version 3 You can turn one, the other, or both on.
4. Power output was exactly as specified
5. President was kind enough to chat with me about my concerns.
6. Love the DIN size. Excellent.

Dislikes:
1. I prefer to see the frequency as full screen instead of the CHannel number.
2. CW has a few bugs. The first character sent is usually clipped.
3. Mic seems a bit light weight but sounds good.

First and foremost, I''ve been a HAM for about 7 years, and have never really been a CB operator.
That said: One of the images for this product says, repeatedly, "This is not a CB!!!". Unfortunately, to me, it seemed to operate like, a CB!
I did somewhat like the radio, however. But instead of having dedicated buttons for a Roger Beep or an Echo Effect, I would''ve rather had buttons for the SWR Meter, or almost anything else embedded in the menu system.
The screen was a bit too retro for me. It''s a bit too much to navigate the menus while trying to decipher what is on the display. I can''t imagine why it would''ve been any more expensive to simply use a Grid LED instead of this.
And, of course...
Channels instead of Frequencies.
This Radio has bands A-J, not bands 10m and 12m
This Radio''s "Channel" display is about 4x higher than the "Frequency" display.
It just felt like it was targeting the CB market a bit too much while side-stepping the Ham Operator market which, technically, this radio should be marketing too.

The Good:
Here''s why it was actually a difficult decision to return it.
The Radio has good power outputs on AM, FM, SSB, and CW.
We''re in one of the lowest Solar Cycles since Radio was invented, and I made contacts from NY to GA within my first hour of powering it on. The Sound quality is quite good for an internal speaker. And to be quite honest, I''m rather fond of having more dials, less menus.

I may eventually pick one up again. But first, I want to get more of a "Base Station" type radio, with more bands available during this low solar cycle.

I''ve had this about a month now and am still finding impressive features, some of which aren''t in the manual. I did the extra channel mod to include 11m, super easy and doesn''t eliminate 10m or 12m, it just adds another band to the band menu. Tuning now runs from 24.710 to 30.110 MHz and can be tuned in as small as .1 KHz increments by using the push button on the tuning dial to move the cursor under the readout to the desired space and then turn the dial.(this is not in the manual).
The TX sound is incredibly clear. People think the mic is cheap because it''s lightweight, DO NOT BE FOOLED! This is an electrete condenser mic and the dual filter is tuned to this specific mic. Don''t change mics! It is different from any other mic out there and other mics won''t work correctly with the tuned circuit in the radio. If you really have to have a heavy mic just hot glue some fishing weights to this one, that''s what the other mics have anyway.
The clarifier is unlocked from the factory, no need to mod it. In fact, it''s better than unlocked, it''s a menu item with 4 options, off, rx only, tx only, or both rx and tx. I''ve never seen this ability on any radio, even on modded radios.
SWR is displayed every time you key up. The freq counter switches to an SWR counter when you key up. It has high SWR protection that it also a menu item that you can turn on or off and set the step down level.
This thing''s got it all!
Well, almost all.
The only two things I don''t like, the bottom firing speaker. Just get rid of it. Is just taking up space in the cabinet. The only place it works is in an overhead mounting anyway. I pulled mine out, maybe it will help with cooling to have the extra airflow through the open holes. Get a good external. No biggie.
The biggie? No direct entry keypad anywhere. A keypad on the mic and this thing would be perfect.

It has about any feature you''d want, and a few (like echo) you might not use. Besides the small footprint, a huge selling point (to me) is the bright display. It''s easy to read in even the brightest sunlight (something that can''t be said for other transceivers like the 980SSB). I think it''s because it''s a light background with dark numbers vs. the 980ssb which is the reverse (light on dark) I''ve owned the previous version of this radio (Lincoln II) and haven''t noticed any big difference between the two, with the exception of the II+ being 12-10 meters and the II only 10m.

Power output (35w PEP) is good, and the typical controls you''d come to expect (Clarifier, Mic gain, NB, etc.) are all there. If there is someone you don''t like to use (I''m not a big fan of "echo" or "Roger beep''s") - don''t use them (at least they''re there). Variable RF power control from the front panel is nice, and even the ASC Squelch works pretty decent. While I could gone on about every feature ad nausem I''d like to mention the Clarifier.

If you talk SSB you''re familiar with how a Clarifier control should work. USA CB''s with sideband only have the ability to vary the receive frequency. In the olden days CB''s like a 148 or Uniden XL were easy to modify the circuitry in order to allow your frequency to track on both transmit and receive. Today it''s almost impossible to do that with a 980ssb or McKinley.

Default setting is Clarifier "OFF". From there you can go into the menu and set it to adjust receive only, transmit only, or receive and transmit. It can be done easily because this isn''t a CB radio. So far, my experience with this feature is just "okay". Sometimes I set it to tx/rx and power down the radio after using it, the menu setting reverts to OFF the next time I turn it ON ----> but not every time (weird). I have one II+ that holds it and another that doesn''t. This isn''t a deal breaker, it''s just annoying.

What I do find a little annoying is how the volume control works. With a typical radio when you power it ON and slowly turn the volume control the speaker audio increases smoothly, but this doesn''t do that. The speaker audio goes from silence to something I would call "2" skipping the lowest setting. As you turn the volume UP there is noticeable distance you have to adjust it to be able to hear anything. This isn''t a big deal in the car, but at home it''s been irritating because late at night I like a low volume as to not bother anyone else in the house, and I can''t get that with a II+ so I don''t use it in the house much any longer, only mobile. I''ve have two of these (bought from different vendors) and both do the same thing so I''m pretty sure it''s not a defective radio Parsee.

As for the origin of manufacture, it''s Vietnam. These days you have to pick your poison and I''ll pick Vietnam over China any day. President''s attention to a quality build is ever-present and I believe their warranties are the best in the business. These almost always sell for around $249, but last year they were reduced by $20 around Black Friday / Cyber Monday.

Even though it has surface mount parts, the board seems pretty heavy duty if ran in a big truck. Stock mic sounds pretty good but does have the funky 5 pin the new Pres/Uniden radios have. The recieve is great, a very close second to the ol HR2510''s of the past. NB/ANL work as they should. HighCut is very nice when running SSB. Yes the echo (adjustable but takes some time) does ok and the tunable rogerbeep tone and time can make it more identifiable i suppose if into that sort of thing. Mine is in a pickup truck. It does do 30 watts out of the box on SSB PeP. am works well, i believe it does a clean 20 to 22 pep with upto a 10 watt dead carrier. After a few weeks i did put it on the bench and did a slight tune and the radio can do upto 55 pep on ssb and stay cool. The chassis is all aluminum and it did get warm but not hot. I left it to peak around 48 watts in the mobile running around 13.5 to 13.8v dc. Custom half and half 104in whip on the tool box. I own the very small President Ronald radio which is a lot better than this Lincoln. The drawback of the Ronald is that it does not have sideband. But I''ve tested this Lincoln side-by-side with my Ronald and this Lincoln will go in the trash can. I promise you it''s not nearly the radio that the President Ronald is. If you have a very nearby strong station this President Lincoln will clip it out and cut the received where you cannot hear their signal. the digital display will indicate that there''s a strong signal coming through but you will not hear the audio. No combination of noise limiter noise blanker or high-cut or none will allow that strong signal to come through. You have to cut down the receive game in order to receive that strong signal. And then you can''t hear any medium or distant stations. all reports of transmission reported that I had very poor modulation. The Rodger beep was stronger than my voice. when I finally unplug the Lincoln and plugged in the President Ronald everybody breathes a sigh of relief and said that I was finally back. This radio in my opinion is junk compared to the Ronald.

For mobile use, the antenna noise limiter and noise blanker are really, really, good. However, I only used it mobile once. It is now a home unit that is powered with a computer power supply. 30 watts AM peak, 56 watts ssb, and just under 40 watts FM are the power measurements into a dummy load. I am not authorised for AM, FM, LSB use on 10 meters because of my lowly license. The RF gain control helps tremendously during noise atmospheric condition days. It is not merely a secondary volume. The roger beep time comes in really handy for 10 meter USB. I set it to 50 millisecond duration and I no longer have to end sentences with, "over," which I hate doing with a passion. With such a short beep set, it does not annoy anybody and It still does the job of removing the, "over," from the end of sentences. 12 meters is only receive for me. My lowly license does not cover 12 meters. CW is smooth with no harsh buzzing or hissing, like some CB/amateur radio combinations are. Speaking of CB, there is supposed to be a conversion for CB that can be done to this radio. It may have something to do with the data port, I am not sure. I already have a CB.

I highly recommend this radio for anybody. You can be a complete novice, like me, or hold the highest license your nation offers, it is the radio for everyone. Even if you do not have a license, it is an excellent receiver for 10 and 12 meters. From what I have heard, with a small conversion, it will even receive 11 meter CB, (probably not transmit). Some business bands can also be picked up, and the end of portion shortwave. It is not a full HF transceiver, but what a radio for £200!
