Unfortunately, the hole will not... See more The plug has several poorly designed features. First, the National Electrical Code (NEC) requires that outlets be wired with 12 gauge wire. The back of these plugs have a hole to insert the stripped wire into and lock the wire in place. Unfortunately, the hole will not fit a 12 gauge wire, only a 14 gauge wire. So it is useless.
Second, I normally attach the line in to one set of screws, and the line out to the other set of screws. Unfortunately it is not possible to put a loop around one screw on each side because the plastic prevents the wire from fitting under the screw. The only way to safely wire the plug is to use a short piece of wire looped around the one screw that will accept it, and then a wire nut to connect the short piece of wire to the black or white feed wire.

My only complaint is the child safety mechanism on these modern switches. Plugging something in can kind of be a pain as you have to wiggle plug just right to get it past the child safety mechanism. This style is known as the NEMA-5 by my electrician friends. So we decided to swap out those old style ( some didnt have the grounding plug ) and upgrade to this square block style. These type of plugs also have the increased safety factor of the tamper resistant on the hot and neutral inserts. The best part of this outlet is no more over tightening the single screw on the older style that result in a cracked faceplate that would eventually fall off the wall. The faceplates included with these outlets have two screens to fasten the plate to the outlet. For outlets with both the switch and outlet we replaced with flat wall switch and this rectangle outlet. The metal used in the mounting areas is poor quality and/or too thin. The tamper-resistant device makes it take excessive pressure to plug anything into it. The poor build quality combined with how difficult it is to plug things in results in seeing the outlet flex in towards the wall when I plug things in. Also the design around the screws for the wires is too restricted. The sides are too tall/close, making it difficult to get the wire in place, especially if the wires are a little short in the first place.

The poor design combined with shoddy materials makes this too dangerous of an outlet for any responsible homeowner to have in their house. The excessive force required to use these will wear down the already weak parts and risks a short when things fall out of place. At least they used flame resistant materials for when this thing catches your wall on fire. See more These are the absolute worst receptacles I''ve ever (tried) to install and I''ve replaced switches and outlets many, many times.

I prefer to wire to screw terminals, as it is safer and has a lower failure rate than stab connections. But after struggling for far too long to wire the terminals, my frustration got the best of me and I attempted to use the stab holes. Some held, some did not, despite carefully exposing the precise amount of wire.

Eventually, I did manage to get it wired to the screws, but lots of wasted time and frustration in doing so, only to find that the outlet covers are completely useless! The screws provided are domed instead of flat and too big to fit the countersink on the cover. Worse still, the outlet and cover holes DO NOT line up correctly. If you are lucky, you can get one screw in, but not both, as you can see in the first two pictures.

And as you can see in the third pic, the ground terminal is at a ridiculous, useless angle, and binds up on the plastic.
